Brakes are a critical safety item and need to be well maintained to provide maximum stopping power, your brakes must be checked regularly.
Disc brakes are found in most modern vehicles in the front as they do 70% of the stopping and drum brakes in the rear. By having drums in the rear, it enables the use of a park brake (hand brake) without any additional parts as would be necessary if the vehicle was 4 wheel disc brake. Essentially, brakes convert motion to heat and disc brakes are favoured by many over drum brakes as the discs will cool quicker thereby resulting in less chance of brake fade (less effective when hot). The braking force of disc brakes is on the pads via the braking system which has the advantage of giving the driver a closer 'feel' to the pedal which can greatly assist avoiding any brake lockup.
Drum brakes were invented in 1902 and now commonly used on the rear of vehicles. The hydraulic system is initiated by pressing the brake pedal which causes the brake shoes to squeeze and cause friction on a rotating drum attached to the wheel. By stopping or slowing the drum, it also stops or slows the wheel. Drum brakes often need replacing and, for this reason, were replaced by disc brakes in many vehicles.Disc brakes were invented for automobiles in 1901 and generally appear on the front wheels, but now more frequently on all four. They are the most popular and effective way of providing braking force for cars, aircraft, and even other wheeled vehicles like bicycles.
